The Basics

Cajón Size

You can’t really go wrong with any cajón or “box drum” — any size, make, or model will be fun to use as a rhythm instrument. Most percussionists prefer to sit atop the instrument to play, so we suggest picking an instrument of an appropriate hight so your feet can rest comfortably on the floor. However, if you find your feet dangling, feel free to turn your instrument on its side, or sit next to it and play.

Cajón Sound

There are many different awesome styles of cajón; two common groups consist of the “string cajon” and “snare cajon.” While both produce a great bass “thump” and high “pop,” they have one main difference: the string cajon is common in Flamenco music and uses 4 guitar strings to create the high tones, while the snare cajón uses a bundle of snare drum wire strands to make its high tones. Overall we recommend the snare cajón since it can produce drum set-like sounds more common in folk and rock music. However, both types of cajon will work with any style of music. Read on for our recommendations so you’ll be keeping time in no time!
